SOUTHERN MAINE MEN'S BASEBALL LEAGUE

1.   The Southern Maine Men’s Baseball League was founded in 1989. And the Men’s Senior Baseball League was founded 1992. After several years of competing for the same resources the two leagues merged in 1996. When the two leagues merged, an agreement was reached to adopt various rules from each league. The league is recognized as the Southern Maine Men’s Baseball League (SMMBL) and affiliated with the National MSBL Organization. Our players come from all around the Greater Portland Area

  1. The SMMBL has two age divisions: 25+ and 35+. Players in the 25+ division become eligible on the day of their 25th birthday and the players in the 35+ must turn 35 within the calendar year.

  2. The 14 teams in the SMMBL 25+ division play a 16 game season beginning at the end of April and finishing in mid-September. Most of our games are played on Sunday mornings in the Greater Portland area. Our games are normally scheduled for a 9:30AM start time. The games normally end around 12 Noon. We also schedule night games and those games are usually played on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights during the summer months with a start time of 7:00PM.

  3. The 5 team SMMBL 35+ division plays 12 regular season games beginning the 3rd week of May and finishing with playoffs in August. Our games are played on Monday and Wednesday nights beginning at 7:00pm

  4. The SMMBL is entirely a wood bat league. Several years ago the decision was made to be exclusively a wood bat league and get rid of the aluminum entirely. The wood bats have created a safer environment for the pitchers and infielders. The wood bat has allowed us to have games played in a timely manner and play the game as it was meant to be played.

  5. The SMMBL hosts the annual Downeast Wood Bat Classic. This tournament is held on the 4th of July weekend and brings teams from state all over New England and others to the Greater Portland area (See link on our homepage). During that tournament our regular season games are not scheduled.
